Rules of Use

Note: the English translation of these rules is for information only, and the original Finnish rules are the only normative rules.

These rules aim to secure each connection owner an equal and secure access to the network.

In addition to these rules, the rules of use of LUT (Lappeenranta University of Technology) computer systems and data network are applied to use of the connection to the extent applicable. Lnet users must comply with these rules.

Owner of the connection and the connection

The owner of the Lnet connection is a person with a lease agreement with LOAS, and who has been given an opportunity to connect to the Lnet network through network services provided by LOAS.

The connection is personal and the owner of the connection is responsible for all use of the connection.

LOAS charges a monthly fee for the use of the Lnet connection that is invoiced a part of the rent.

In addition to the owner of the connection, persons authorized to use LUT?s network services and persons who are part of some other Funet member organization (such as Finnish universities and universities of applied sciences) has the right to use the connection temporarily.

Responsibilities of the owner of the connection

Owners of the connection are responsible for ensuring information security of their computer and for doing their best to prevent unauthorized use.

Owners of the connection must report any defects and misuses that they observe immediately to the person responsible for the network in their building.

LOAS will not be held liable for any damage caused to the equipment or information losses caused by thunderstorms, power cuts and other, similarly unforeseeable situations.

The owner of the connection is responsible for all property that is given to him or her in order to use the connection, and will be required to pay compensation where necessary.

Information security

All kind of network traffic monitoring is absolutely forbidden, and leads to immediate shutdown of the connection. Persons responsible for the operation of the network can monitor network traffic if this is necessary for the operation of the network.

Commercial use

Commercial use of the Lnet connection is forbidden. The name Lnet or lnet.fi domain must not be used in any commercial context.

Service provision

Provision of services from devices connected to Lnet is principally prohibited. However, the provision of small-scale services such as finger and ident is allowed. Permission granted by the person responsible for the network in your building is needed to provide any larger-scale services, e.g. websites.

Misuse

The owner of the connection will either permanently or temporarily lose their right to use the connection if they violate the rules of use of the network. The owner of the connection has full liability for damages.

Changes to the rules and valid rules

These rules can be changed by notifying the residents of the changes a month before they take effect on the notice board of the buildings where Lnet is available.

The valid version of these rules can be acquired from the person responsible for the Lnet network or from LOAS.

The latest version of these rules is always available on Lnet's website at http://www.lnet.fi.
